Day Six:

We rose in our Hastings hotel to the beautiful sight of the Channel.
And to the sight of Peter, the charming proprietor of our hotel.

From the gatehouse of Battle Abbey we enter the monastery precinct to step back in time.  William the Conqueror founded Battle Abbey in pious contrition for the death of Harold. (Johanna, Daryl, Vicki, Roland, Julia, Lizzie and [seated] Rachel)

Battle Abbey overlooks the fields of Hastings, where the battle took place on October 14, 1066.

Lizzie has just given her site report, and she’s pretty happy with a job well done.

From Battle, we headed to Winchester, whose cathedral is a lovely specimen of English Gothic.

What most interested us, though, were the cathedral’s transepts, with their telltale elements of Norman-inspired architecture, like these clerestory wall passages.

And of course the Winchester Bible:

End Day Six:

The day finished with a marathon drive – through sheets of rain – all the way to Canterbury.
