Day Five:

We had a big day ahead of us.  We had a few hours' worth of driving to reach Calais. Fortunately the ride took us along the very scenic Norman coast, past Deauville, Trouville, and Honfleur. And it was a good thing that we were departing, too, since the B&B’s welcome had worn thin... (let’s not mention the “Bayeux Butter Incident”).

Our Norman experience having come to a close, it was time to see things from the other side of the Channel.

Tasting English sea air, Roland lets out a shout!

But before celebrating our conquest of the Sussex shores, there was still work to be done.  Some students still had site reports to give...  Aboard the ferry, Julia, Roland, Lizzie and Vicki (foreground) brush up on their homework.

Arriving at Dover, with the Norman castle just above, we get our first taste of Conquest architecture.

End of Day Five:

Once the mechanics of our goofy rental cars were figured out, we left Dover and hit the coastal road for Hastings. (Not from Pevensy as William the Conqueror did, but our route was jolly all the same.)
