Schedule of the Honors Program
Class of 2006
This page is intended to help those of you who want to write
an honors thesis in your senior year. We encourage you to start thinking
about this in your junior year and ask you to think of three matters: what you
want to write on; whom you wish to work with, i.e. your faculty advisor; and whether
you really really want to make this commitment --- doing a senior paper can be
immensely rewarding but it involves time, effort and a requisite fire in the belly
(as well as a GPA in the major of 3.0 or better).
2005, Spring semester: find a topic, which can be general in scope at this point,
then find a professor and talk with her/him about it.
If matters proceed with clarity, then register for ARTH
398 at Advanced Registration time.
2005, Fall semester:
September: Complete the preliminary paperwork by 19 September, including
the Honors Thesis Proposal Form, which goes to the Undergraduate
Chair. By now you have your topic and your advisor. So now is the
time to begin research!
October: Continue research and check with your advisor...
31 October: Advance Registration begins. Register for ARTH 398 for Spring Semester 2005.
November: Continue research and check in with your advisor...
21 November: Submit the Thesis Title Form to the Undergraduate Chair
(that's the second part of the Thesis Proposal Form).
12 December: Honors thesis Colloquium. Present your topic, its issues and
what you intend to do with them in the form of a fifteen minute
talk. The audience includes your advisor, other professors, and
your peers.
2006, Spring Semester:
January: Complete your research and start writing!
5 February (Sunday): Undergraduate Comprehensive examination, which all
senior majors take.
1 March: Around this time, give your advisor a rough draft (as complete andwell
written as possible) of your paper.
20 March: Submit two final copies (one to your advisor and the other to the
Undergraduate Chair) before this day ends!
And.....(this is for real) enjoy!
