ARTH 515-401/ SAST 503 Proseminar in Indian Architecture
Instructor: Meister F 12-2

Between 400 and 1000 AD, a remarkable new architecture evolved in South Asia to fulfill evolving forms of worship. The origins of temple Hinduism are complex and little studied. This workshop will encourage participants to explore the social, historical, and symbolic frames for this architecture and to understand its multiple forms and uses. The seminar will introduce students to the remarkable variety of India’s architectural accomplishments and to broad issues of how architecture can compress meaning through formal means while accommodating multiple agendas of use.
