ARTH 301-402/VLST 301 • What is Visual Studies? •
T 4:30-7:30

Instructor: Verstegan

Visual Studies 301 is a seminar-format course that builds on VLST 101 to challenge students to develop independent ideas about the eye, mind and image. By posing the question “What is visual studies?” students take the foundation of VLST 101 and delve deeper into similar material to master the variety of approaches to eye, mind and image so that they can creatively understand various points of view and synthesize them together. The course is arranged so that parallel and sometimes antagonistic takes by various fields – the psychologist, philosopher, and historian – on similar problems force the student to assimilate ideas together, deciding for herself what is interesting and relevant. By the end of the course, students should be well on their way to posing questions and problems that can form the basis of the their senior projects.
