The last decade has brought a series of landmark publications which have significantly modified and enlarged the understanding of Carolingian architecture. These include Werner Jacobsen's 1992 book on the St. Gall Monastery Plan, convincingly disproving many basic hypotheses of the 1979 book of Horn and Born; the exemplary 1996 monograph of Thomas Ludwig et al. on Einhard's basilica at Steinbach; the numerous publications by Richard Hodges and collaborators on the sensational excavations at S. Vincenzo al Volturno; major new discoveries at the Torhalle at Lorsch and the westwork of Corvey; and the monumental 1997 corpus of German Carolingian and Ottonian capitals by Ruth Meyer. The seminar will feature state-of-research reports on the monuments and on the issues raised by new discoveries. A reading knowledge of German is required.
