Course Description
Introduction to the varieties of art and leading
masters in 17th-century European capital centers: Madrid, Rome, Paris,
London, Amsterdam, and Prague.
Attention to art-making in the context of absolutist
monarchs, the Catholic CounterReformation, the Thirty Years War, and the
rise of capitalism as well as art-collecting. Featured artists indude:
Goltzius, Rubens, van Dyck, Velazquez, Caravaggio, Bemini, Poussin, Rembrandt,
and Vermeer. There will be an intensive examination of works in the Philadelphia
Museum of Art. A WATU-affiliated course.
