Description
This course provides
a general historical and cultural survey of the Low Countries from about 1350,
under the rule of the Dukes of Burgundy, to about 1559, the moment when the
rulers of Spain began to withdraw from their local administration of this region.
Lectures will focus on politics and religion as well as visual culture of this
period and region. Artists to be featured include Jan van Eyck and Rogier van
der Weyden, Hans Memling, Hieronymus Bosch, and Pieter Bruegel. In addition,
special attention will be given to the spring 2000 exhibition of luxury manuscripts
of this period and region at the Philadelphia Museum of Art as well as the outstanding
permanent collection of Flemish paintings at the PMA. Requirements include one
short and one long research paper, which can be related.
