Course Description
This seminar focuses upon building the architecture of ritual in
medieval Italy, from roughly the year 1000 to the early fourteenth century.
We shall be considering objects, artifacts, implements. These include
baldachins, choir screens, baptismal fonts, pulpits, candelabra, Exultet
Rolls, and altarpieces. All functioned as objects of, enclosures
for, and the visual highlighting of, the rituals of the Roman Church.
Our purpose is to rediscover the life those beautiful objects once enjoyed
so
many centuries ago.
