Course Description

This lecture course looks at buildings, sculpture, pictures and other things produced in the Italian peninsula from Y1K to the mid-fourteeenth century.  As a narrative coursing through time, this course considers the stylistic periods of Romanesque and Gothic art.  Its deeper narrative, however, is a travelogue, in which we roam from region to region, from the Veneto to Sicily and back again, seeing how local traditions of making take shape, even as vernacular language does at this time.  So travelling, we also encounter works by artists such as Giotto, Duccio and Antelami, as well as others who remain unknown to us.  Wherever we go, we will see wonderful things.
