The culture of Roman bathing as reflected in the archaeology of ancient bath buildings is in the focus of this freshman seminar.  It encompasses technical aspects of refined heating and water distribution systems as well as concepts of decoration, spatial organization and architectural theory-all of which contributed to the most splendid demonstration of public luxury the ancient world has ever seen.  For some spiritual movements of that world, however, such a 'body culture' was nothing but suspicious.
