Nineteenth-twentieth century
Catalogue number 49.
Accession number 88.520.

Lintels 48, 49, 54, 55, and two other vertical panels in the collection were once part of a village shrine near Dhaka. No. 49 depicts a leopard biting the neck of a white horse, perhaps illlustrating a folk tale. The fantastic figures at the end of this lintel are white elephants with their trunks raised at each end. Such auspicious animals guard a shrine, proclaim the deity, and represent aspects of nature's fertility.
