The 60s and 70s were a time of great social and cultural upheaval
in the U.S. and Europe. The period of the late 60s and early 70s,
in particular,
is marked by a shift in thinking about art and its relation to the
social field, and the advent of what is now called "postmodernism."
This seminar
will examine the new forms of artistic practice that emerged and developed
during this transitional period, including pop art and minimalism, body
art, conceptual art, the art of grids, earthworks, site-specific art,
and works critiquing the museum. We will consider a variety of critical
approaches towards this new work as well, including: modernist formalism,
phenomenology, social art history, feminism and gay studies.
