You might call this course 'Who's Who.' Our concern is who is
who in the imagery of the Latin Middle Ages, what they did, and how we
tell who
is who. So we shall be looking at a vast array, from God the Father
to San Bernardino of Siena, and at events from the Creation to the
Apocalypse as these figure in the visual arts. We shall also
explore ways to look up these people, places and things, how to put that
training
to good use in dealing with objects from the PMA and other places,
and ways to pass this on to your students . . . And when you think about
it,
what we learn about medieval imagery also applies to the art of the
Renaissance, the Baroque and, here and there, later art as well.
