Proseminar in Indian Art: Visuality in South Asia: Readings in Art and Seeing

Important as texts have been to South Asia's history, perceptions of the physical world dominate experience within South Asian cultures. Seeing and being seen, vocalizing and hearing, contribute to the construction of meaning. This pro-seminar will approach of South Asia's perceptual world as expressed and tested by art, and methods to frame art as a source of knowledge. Class members will participate in the 3rd Annual Anne d'Harnoncourt Symposium, "Displaying India's Art in the 21st Century," at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Sept. 31-Oct. 2, and read and discuss work by participating speakers as well as other essays through the semester.
