ARTH 528/ AAMW 528 • Topography of Ancient Rome

Instructor: Haselberger T 3-5

The cityscape of Rome under Augustus and the Roman capital’s transformation from “a city of bricks into one of marble” are in the focus of this graduate proseminar. We will make use of both material and written documents and critically analyze ancient political strategies as well as modern scholarship on the “Golden Rome” of Augustus. Of interest for students of art history, architecture, archaeology, and classics. Knowledge of Latin and some familiarity with Rome will be a plus, but are not required.
