ARTH 586-640Concerning the Spiritual in Modern ArtW 6-8:40

Instructor: Rebecca Butterfield

Wassily Kandinsky’s Concerning the Spiritual in Art, published in the early 20th century, argued that art could be a pathway to the transcendent in an increasingly materialistic world. Since then, numerous artists have attempted to create works that would give their viewers an experience of spirituality. Some have attempted to do this through the contemplation of abstract or monochromatic works (Kandinsky; Yves Klein); some through ritualized performances (Joseph Beuys, Ana Mendieta); and others through religious subject matter (Anselm Kiefer, Chris Offili, Andres Serrano). These artists have drawn upon traditional Judeo-Christian thought, Eastern religions and more arcane spiritual philosophies such as alchemy or goddess cults. This course will explore the various strategies modern artists have used to convey the spiritual in their work and the passionate responses of their public.
