This course examines over two hundred years of artistic production by and about peoples of African descent living in the United States from the colonial period through WWII.  While focusing primarily on the fine arts, a variety of media and artistic movements will be examined from eighteenth-century colonial portraits and the material culture of slavery to the transatlantic modernism of the early Harlem Renaissance.
