Survey of the visual arts in Italy in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, with emphasis on painting, sculpture and architecture in the major cultural centers. Topics will include the changing artistic geography in the period; the significance of site to meaning; the status of the image; the cultivation of artistic identify; the importance of particular materials and techniques; and the invention or redefinition of individual formats, genres, and typologies, including the altarpiece, the tomb, the portrait, the gallery picture, the palace, and the garden . The course will devote attention to Donatello, Leonardo, Michelangelo, Raphael, and Titian, among other artists.
