Art of Iran: Studying a Nizami Manuscript

Course Description

This semester, the pro- seminar on the "Art of Iran" will deal with the study of a 16thc. copy of the Khamsa of Nizami made in Shiraz presently owned by the UPenn Museum using several different methods and approaches. Among these will be the text and image concerns such as choice and rate of illustration; aspects and uses of codicology; the problem of ‘court’ versus ‘provincial’ production centers, and the location of the Nizami stories within Persian culture.

Dr. Pardis Minuchehr, (Lecturer in Persian, AMES) will be collaborating on the course and exhibition.

The members of the seminar will also prepare an exhibition to be held in the Rare Books Gallery through the spring, 2005

The seminar will meet at the seminar room of Rare Books Library, Van Pelt Library.
