ARTH 711
Temple Arts of S. India
Instructor: Professor Meister
W 3-5

Course Description

The ritual and political worlds of South India have produced great temples, sculpture, bronze ritual images, textiles, and painting that the West has both marveled at and attempted to study for more than a century and a half. This graduate seminar will review recent scholarship and draw on the collections of the Philadelphia Museum of Art to allow students to chose an area of production and a methodology of approach to enter this remarkable artistic landscape.
