Comparing and contrasting outstanding examples of Greek and Roman architecture – single buildings as
well as larger architectural compositions – forms the focus of this undergraduate seminar. Special
emphasis will be laid on the principles guiding the design of these structures and the diverse, or common,
Greek and Roman approaches toward the building tasks (such as temples, theaters, baths, market places,
fortifications, city planning). The methodological ‘tools’ for these analyses will be discussed and a
broader historical context developed. Field trips to the Second Back Building and the Philadelphia
Museum of Art. No prerequisites.
