Course Description

The course is an introduction to the nature of architecture and city form currently shaping the landscape of Non-Western Third/World cultures. The understanding of momentous social, cultural and psychological transformation of selected non-Western societies, particularly in the Middle East, South Asia and South East Asia, will be used as a lens to focus on emerging dimensions of architecture. Seminal works by individual architects, architecture by anonymous builders, planned urban morphologies, and spontaneous urban settlements will be reviewed to reveal the form and content of this tranformational process. Notions of cultural identity, regionalism, place-consciousness, mythological consciousness, modernity and developmental issues will be investigated.
