This class offers an introduction to European and American art between
1900 and 1945. These achievements cover a broad spectrum of
works and subject matter, from traditional representations to ground-breaking
avant-garde abstractions. We will situate these paintings
and sculptures within their social, cultural, and political backgrounds.
Discussions and assigned readings represent diverse views of history,
interpretation and criticism. Some of the issues we will consider
include the role of art and artists in the culture and politics of the
times,
abstraction over representation, and Slow versus Shigh art.
Students are expected to actively participate in class discussions.
Exams and papers test students ability to analyze and understand formal
qualities and distinctions between artists and movements, identify selected
major works, and situate those works in their historical context.
The class will meet a few times at the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
