WATU Long Paper Assignment
ARTH 102 Spring 1998

This assignment is for WATU students ONLY, and replaces the long paper
assignment described on the Art History 102 syllabus.

Please choose a topic from the following list, then in a 10-12 page
research paper, address the themes outlined there. These broad topics
are designed to guide your thinking about the building or artwork; as you
research you should develop a specific thesis. Your thesis should not
encompass every idea you encounter in your reading; rather use the paper
to develop one or two ideas in detail. Refer to the artwork itself, as
well as primary and secondary texts, to support your thesis. In the
introductory bibliography are a number of books and articles pertaining
to each topic feel free to read beyond what is listed here. We encourage you to use
Franklin and the bibliography of each text to locate additional
information. Also essential are the Avery Index, Art Index and
Bibliography of the History of Art, all accessible under databases on the
Penn library home page.
